West Nottinghamshire College has taken a significant step towards preparing its students for future careers in Uniform Protective Services, such as the Armed Forces and police, by transforming an unused tennis court into a state-of-the-art, multi-functional outdoor gym.
This upgrade has created a world-class fitness set-up from the ground up, benefiting students in numerous ways.
The goal.
Recognising the importance of physical fitness for demanding roles in the Uniform Protective Services, the college set out to enhance its facilities by providing a multi-functional training environment with the aim of creating a world-class fitness set-up. Promoting everyday fitness, the college sought to support students in developing the physical and mental resilience necessary for their future careers.
The solution.
The newly established gym provides a versatile training environment that caters to the physical fitness needs that are essential for careers in protective services.
This previously underutilised space now features two 20ft containers, anchored with external rigging, covered with a soft roof canopy, boasting various fitness zones to enhance strength, endurance and overall physical conditioning. This transformation not only maximises the use of available resources but also aligns with the college’s mission to promote fitness for everyday life.

For students enrolled in uniformed protective services courses, regular physical training is crucial.
